Health insurance

First aid and emergency medical care are free for foreigners, in other cases students have to pay for the treatment.

Hungarian authorities require international students to have valid insurance in Hungary.

How to obtain a valid insurance?

International students of the University of Szeged are eligible to take Generali Studium Health Insurance, an insurance policy specifically designed for students. Generali Studium covers the costs of general medical services in Hungary. The health insurance can be obtained at the Students’ Service Office (HSZI) at the Attila József Study and Information Center (TIK) in Szeged (Ady tér 10, 6722).

For Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship holders,

The insurance is included in the scholarship. Students are allowed to use the facilities of the Hungarian Social Healthcare System (TB) after obtaining a valid Hungarian Social Security number and card (TAJ-kártya). The application for the so-called ’TAJ-kártya’ is handled through the SH Office (6720 Szeged, Dugonics tér 13.)

For fee-paying international students

This insurance covers the costs of general medical services in Hungary. The insurance periods are six-month periods, starting on 1st September of each calendar year and ending on 28th February of the following calendar year, or 1st February to 30th September.

You can get Generali Studium Health Insurance in person at the Students’ Service Office or via email at hszi@hszi.u-szeged.hu (please attach your valid passport, national ID or residence permit to the email).

It is important that in order to activate your health insurance, your student status needs to be active and your financial status needs to be in order. This may take some time at the beginning of the semester, so you might not be able to get your insurance on your first day.

If you have Generali Studium Health Insurance and you feel sick, we kindly ask you to visit your GP, who you can choose based on your area of residence.

If your condition requires a consultation with a specialist, your GP will refer you to a specialist of the University of Szeged Clinical Center. Therefore, it is not recommended to turn up at a clinic without a referral from your GP, since clinics require referral from primary care providers. Without a referral, you may be asked to pay the full cost of your care in advance.
